American Sign Language has its own grammar, built on visual logic rather than spoken-language conventions. Understanding this structure is the difference between sounding like a textbook and communicating like a fluent signer.

Topic-Comment Structure

The backbone of ASL grammar is the topic-comment structure. You establish the topic first, then make a comment about it. In English you might say “I like pizza.” In ASL, the equivalent is more like “PIZZA, I LIKE.” The topic (pizza) comes first, followed by the comment (I like it).

This is not a random rearrangement. Topic-comment order reflects how visual languages prioritize context. By naming the topic first, you give your viewer a mental frame before adding details. Think of it like a camera establishing a wide shot before zooming in.

Facial markers are essential here. When you sign the topic, you raise your eyebrows slightly and hold a brief pause. This “topic marker” tells the viewer that what comes next is the comment. Without the eyebrow raise and pause, the sentence can read as a flat sequence of signs without clear grammatical structure.

Not every ASL sentence uses topic-comment order. Simple subject-verb-object (SVO) sentences work too, especially in casual conversation. “I EAT APPLE” is perfectly grammatical ASL. The point is that topic-comment is a core structure you need to understand, even if you do not use it in every sentence. This convention exists because time context changes the meaning of everything that follows. ASL does not use verb tenses the way English does. There is no past-tense suffix or future-tense auxiliary verb. Instead, you establish the time frame once at the beginning, and all subsequent signs are understood within that frame until you introduce a new one.

Common time signs include tomorrow, YESTERDAY, NOW, LAST-WEEK, and NEXT-MONTH. Once you sign a time reference, it remains in effect for the rest of the conversation or until you explicitly change it. This is efficient and elegant, but it trips up English speakers who instinctively want to mark each verb for tense.

The Role of Facial Grammar

Facial expressions in ASL are not decorative; they are grammatical. Specific facial movements change the meaning of a sentence just as word order or inflection does in English. Raised eyebrows mark yes/no questions and topic phrases. Furrowed brows mark wh-questions (who, what, where, when, why). A head tilt or shake can negate a statement.

Consider the difference between “YOU LIKE COFFEE” signed with raised eyebrows (a yes/no question: “Do you like coffee?”) versus the same signs with a neutral face (a statement: “You like coffee”). The manual signs are identical. Only the facial grammar changes the sentence type.

This is one of the hardest aspects of ASL for hearing learners because spoken English does not use the face as a grammatical channel. Many new signers focus entirely on their hands and produce “flat face” signing, which strips sentences of crucial grammatical information. Questions and Negation in ASL

ASL distinguishes two question types through facial grammar. Wh-questions (using signs like who, where, or WHY) use furrowed brows and a slight head tilt forward. The wh-sign can appear at the beginning or end of the sentence, though sentence-final placement is more common in everyday conversation.

Negation in ASL typically involves a headshake that co-occurs with the signs in the sentence. “I NOT UNDERSTAND” is signed while shaking the head throughout. You can also use specific negation signs like NOT, NOTHING, NEVER, or NONE, often combined with the headshake for emphasis.

Conditional sentences (if/then structures) use a specific facial marker: raised eyebrows during the “if” clause, followed by a neutral or affirmative expression during the “then” clause. “IF RAIN, I STAY HOME” uses raised eyebrows on “IF RAIN” and a neutral face on “I STAY HOME.” This two-part facial structure mirrors the two-part logical structure of the sentence.

Classifiers and Spatial Grammar

ASL uses the physical signing space in front of your body as a three-dimensional map. You can place people, objects, and locations in specific spots and then refer back to them throughout a conversation by pointing or directing verbs toward those locations. This spatial grammar replaces many of the pronouns and prepositions that English relies on.

Classifiers are handshapes that represent categories of objects. A “1” handshape (index finger extended) can represent a person standing or walking. A “3” handshape (thumb and two fingers, like a vehicle classifier) represents a car, bus, or train. A flat “B” hand can represent a flat surface. You move these classifiers through space to show action, location, and spatial relationships.

For example, to sign “The car drove past the house,” you would place the “house” in one location using a classifier, then move the “3” vehicle classifier past it. This single visual demonstration conveys information that requires an entire prepositional phrase in English. Common Sentence Structure Mistakes

The most pervasive error is signing in English word order, known as Signed Exact English (SEE) structure. To break this habit, think about the meaning you want to convey, not the English words, then structure it visually.

Another common mistake is omitting facial grammar. Without the eyebrow raise, a topic-comment sentence loses its grammatical framing. Without the brow furrow, a wh-question looks like a statement. Practicing facial markers should be part of every grammar drill.

New learners also tend to over-sign, including articles (a, an, the) and function words (is, are, was) that do not exist in ASL. Strip your sentences down to content words, use space and facial grammar to supply the relationships, and your ASL will immediately become more natural.

Finally, forgetting to establish time at the beginning of a sentence leads to ambiguity. If you sign “I GO STORE” without a time reference, your viewer does not know whether this happened yesterday, is happening now, or will happen tomorrow. Always set the time frame first when it matters to the meaning.
