Sound recognition features on iOS and Android can alert you when your phone detects specific sounds — a doorbell, knock, siren, dog bark, baby cry, or running water. When the sound is detected, the phone sends a notification (visual, vibration, or both). This turns your smartphone into a portable alerting device that works wherever you are.

Funding Your Communication Devices

Many hearing impaired communication devices can be obtained at no cost or with significant financial assistance. Here is where to look for funding.

State TEDPs are the first stop. These programs distribute free phones, alerting devices, and accessories funded by phone bill surcharges. Every state has one. Eligibility typically requires only a hearing loss certification and state residency. Visit your state program’s website or call 711 and ask to be connected.

Captioned phone providers (CaptionCall, ClearCaptions, Hamilton CapTel) provide their phones and captioning service at no charge. VRS providers (Sorenson, ZVRS, Convo) provide free video phones and free ASL-interpreted calling. These services are FCC-funded and have no income requirement.

State vocational rehabilitation agencies fund communication devices as part of employment support plans.
