The right assistive technology for hearing impaired students can transform the educational experience from one of constant struggle to one of genuine engagement. From personal FM systems that deliver a teacher’s voice directly to a student’s hearing aid to real-time captioning tools that display every word on a screen, these technologies remove barriers to learning and help students achieve their full academic potential.

FM and Remote Microphone Systems

FM systems are the most widely used assistive technology in classrooms. The teacher wears a small wireless microphone that transmits directly to a receiver connected to the student’s hearing aid or cochlear implant. This bypasses the distance and background noise that make classrooms so challenging for hearing impaired students.

Research consistently shows that FM systems improve speech recognition in noise by 10-15 decibels. For a student who catches only 50% of words without an FM system, that improvement can raise comprehension to 90% or above. The American Academy of Audiology recommends FM systems as a first-line classroom accommodation for any student with hearing loss.

Modern remote microphone systems (like the Phonak Roger series) have evolved beyond traditional FM. They use adaptive digital transmission to automatically find the clearest frequency, reducing interference from other devices. Some models include a “MultiTalker Network” mode where multiple microphones connect to one receiver, ideal for group discussions and collaborative activities.

Proper setup matters. The microphone should be positioned about six inches from the teacher’s mouth, typically clipped to the collar or worn on a lanyard. Teachers should remember to mute the microphone during private conversations and side discussions. Students should practice switching between the FM receiver and their hearing aid’s regular microphone, so they can hear both the teacher and nearby classmates as needed.

Captioning and Note-Taking Tools

Real-time captioning provides a text display of everything the teacher says. CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) is the gold standard, delivered by a trained stenographer who produces verbatim text at speeds over 200 words per minute with 98%+ accuracy. CART can be provided in person or remotely, with text displayed on a student’s laptop, tablet, or a dedicated screen.

Automatic speech recognition (ASR) technology has become a viable alternative for less formal settings. Tools like Google Live Transcribe, Otter.ai, and Microsoft’s Group Transcribe provide real-time captions on a student’s device at no cost. While accuracy is lower than human CART (typically 85-95% depending on conditions), these tools are available instantly and require no advance scheduling.

Note-taking services pair a hearing impaired student with a classmate or professional note-taker who records lecture content. This allows the hearing impaired student to focus entirely on watching the teacher (for lipreading or sign language interpreting) without splitting attention between watching and writing. Many universities provide note-taking as a standard disability services accommodation.

Some students benefit from a combination of captioning and note-taking. A student might use live captions during the lecture for real-time access and then review a note-taker’s organized notes afterward for study purposes. Visual and Multimedia Supports

Visual supports go beyond dedicated assistive devices. Simple classroom strategies like displaying written instructions on a whiteboard, providing lecture outlines in advance, and using visual aids during lessons benefit hearing impaired students enormously. These practices reduce reliance on auditory information and give students multiple channels for receiving content.

Captioned videos are a must. Any video shown in class should have accurate captions enabled. Most educational platforms (YouTube, Khan Academy, Coursera) offer auto-generated captions, but teachers should review them for accuracy, especially for technical or subject-specific vocabulary. Incorrect captions can confuse rather than help.

Interactive whiteboards and presentation tools that display text alongside visual content help hearing impaired students follow along without relying solely on the teacher’s spoken words. Tools like Google Slides with speaker notes visible on a student’s device, or collaborative platforms like Nearpod, create a visual parallel to the lecture.

For science labs, physical education, and other hands-on classes, visual cue systems (like colored flags or light signals) replace auditory signals like whistles or verbal commands. A flashing light can indicate “stop,” “start,” or “attention” without any sound. These adaptations are simple, inexpensive, and benefit the entire class by providing redundant information through multiple sensory channels.

Communication Access for Deaf Students

For students who are Deaf and use sign language as their primary communication mode, assistive technology overlaps with interpreting and visual communication systems. Video remote interpreting (VRI) can provide ASL access in classrooms where an on-site interpreter is not available, though in-person interpreters remain the preferred option for complex academic content.

Deaf students in mainstream classrooms may use a combination of an ASL interpreter, FM system, and captioning. The interpreter provides real-time language access, the FM system helps during whole-class audio (like a video or group discussion), and captioning provides a text record for review. This layered approach ensures maximum access across different classroom activities.

For distance learning, captioning and interpreting must be integrated into the video conferencing platform. Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams all support live captioning and interpreter pin features. The interpreter should be pinned to the Deaf student’s screen so they remain visible regardless of who is speaking. Automatic captions serve as a backup when the interpreter’s video is briefly interrupted.

Students who are learning ASL as their language of instruction benefit from technology that reinforces visual learning. ASL dictionaries, sign language practice apps, and video-based vocabulary tools support language development alongside academic content. Gallaudet University and the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) have developed extensive digital resources for this purpose.

Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), public schools must provide assistive technology that a student needs to receive a free and appropriate public education (FAPE). This includes FM systems, captioning services, interpreters, and any other devices or services identified in the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP). The school bears all costs.

The IEP team, which includes parents, teachers, an audiologist, and other specialists, determines what assistive technology is appropriate. Parents should come to IEP meetings prepared with information about available technologies and their child’s specific needs. The student’s audiologist can provide recommendations based on hearing test results and classroom acoustic assessments.

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act provides an alternative framework for students who may not qualify for IDEA services but still need accommodations. A 504 plan can include assistive technology, preferential seating, captioning, and other supports. Section 504 covers both K-12 schools and post-secondary institutions that receive federal funding.

At the college level, the Office of Disability Services coordinates accommodations. Students must self-identify and provide documentation of their hearing loss. Typical accommodations include CART, sign language interpreters, note-taking services, FM systems, and priority seating. The school is required to provide effective communication access but has some flexibility in choosing which specific technology to offer. If the provided accommodation is not effective, the student should advocate for alternatives through the disability services office or file a complaint with the Office for Civil Rights (OCR).
